Beastars ビースターズ

An anthropomorphic animal society and the use of a carnivore/herbivore conundrum as a plot theme isn’t exactly ground breaking; the first few seconds of the first episode will immediately remind you of Zootopia. Also, anyone who enjoyed Hasumi Hana’s ‘Pendulum: Kemonohito Omegaverse’ series and remembered the part about Ruado lamenting the fact that he didn’t have time to trim his nails before that happened will feel a bit funny watching Legoshi’s hands in the first few episodes. What I truly wanted to say was that I loved the first season of Beastars, which was released on Netflix just 5 days ago.

This manga series by Itagaki Paru won a couple of awards, including a ‘Best Shonen Manga’ at the Annual Kodansha Manga Awards. While I can see why it won (Paru managed to create sexual tension between a wolf and a rabbit!) I’m not sure if it should be classified as shonen; the plot primarily revolved around high school romance and racial problems, but perhaps there will be more action in the volumes following the end of Season 1. I’m definitely itching to find out.
